Alvaretta R. Jones

Alvaretta Ruvenia Jones, 92, passed away on January 24, 2024, at her home. She was the widow of Calvin Jones, predeceased on October 22, 1998. They shared 45 years together before his passing and prayerfully they are now together again. Alvaretta was born in Savannah, Georgia to parents Richard Simmons and Geneva Ancrum. In 1949, Alvaretta received a promotion certificate upon completing the 8th grade. Even without higher education, she gained employment with New York City Hospital as an elevator operator. She received promotions to medical records clerk, followed by Assistant Supervisor of the Bureau of Child Welfare in Queens, NY. Alvaretta retired as supervisor of housekeeping at Camp LaGuardia Men's Shelter in Chester, NY. Alvaretta began her forever walk with the Lord in 1953 at Mount Harmon Baptist Church in New York City and was a long-standing member of Harmony Baptist Church in Middletown, NY. She volunteered for numerous church functions, outreach programs and was a choir member. During employment in NYC, she was a shop steward for Union Teamsters Local 237. In retirement, Alvaretta continued her volunteer service at Mulberry House Senior Center from 2005-2012 in the dining, crafting and pen pal programs with over 2800 combined service hours. Alvaretta also volunteered as the 5th Floor greeter at Garnett Health Medical Center for 9 years totaling 2400 service hours. Alvaretta was a child of GOD, a wife, a praying mother, loving grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She loved people, volunteering, movies, westerns, game shows, music, dancing, reading and most of all she adored spending time with her devoted daughter. Alvaretta is survived by her daughter, Ruvenia Shine and her children Christian-Lee Hannon, Clareyssa Hall (Ryan), and Clarence Shine Jr.; her grandchildren Nathaniel Charles, Nehemiah Calvin Aryanna Naomi, Nia-Lou Clareyssa, Ryan Fitzgerald Jr, Nash Cole and Malachi Calvin; sons, Stephen Jones, David Jones (Sonja) Adrian Jones (Jan) and Andrew Jones. Sixteen grandchildren, over 23 great grandchildren. And her sisters, Olivia Bailey, Odessa Simmons and Eleanor Ginn. Alveretta was predeceased by her husband Calvin, daughter Shirley Ann, son Desmond Kevin, sisters Gloria, Georgia Mae, brothers Herbert and Cecil, as well as daughter-in-law Louise Jones. A viewing will be held on Saturday February 3, 2024, 11:45 at Martinez-Morse Funeral Home, 33 Railroad Ave. Middletown, NY. from 11:45 until the time of service. Interment will take place at the Circleville Cemetery, Circleville, NY. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to Harmony Christian School, which is located at 1790 Rte. 211 E, Middletown NY 10941.
