Brian Joseph Eltz

Brian Joseph Eltz of Middletown, NY, passed away on December 6, 2021. He was born on February 8th, 1952, in Middletown, NY, to parents Linford and Mary Eltz. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1970, recently celebrating his 50th class reunion. Brian married the love of his life, Gretchen Petersen, who he endearingly referred to as ‘Honey’, on April 29th, 1979, in Middletown, NY, celebrating every day of their 45 years together. After high school he apprenticed as a butcher under Richard Zoghby; working at Zoghby’s Prime Meats until 1983 when he became the owner and proprietor of Brian Eltz Prime Meats. He owned the business for twenty years. His wife and children played an integral role in the life of the business following his personification of work ethic and professionalism. He was a consummate professional and absolute artist when it came to being a butcher, mentoring many young men. Everyone who worked for him left with life lessons of professionalism and work ethic. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and spending time at his weekend home nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, especially when his family was there to share in his love for the land and home. He found a kind of indescribable solace there, as did all the family. A member of the White Oak Gun Club for over 40 years, he hunted with his father-n-law (whom he referred to as ‘Dear-old dad’), son and many other hunters (referred to as the ‘Old-Timers’). He was the camp cook during hunting season, and he tirelessly enjoyed his love of cooking and the camaraderie. He was also a member of the BPOE Lodge #1097 for nearly 50 years. Referred to as the ‘Legend’ by friends and family because of his kindness, whimsical nature and ability to always see the best in life, he embraced life to the fullest and had a genuine kindness in his heart for those he loved; always putting others first. His family was his life, and he would often say how incredibly proud he was of their accomplishments and their love of family and of life. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. He will be fondly missed by all, and he will remain in the hearts of many. He is survived by his loving wife, Gretchen, son Erik Nicholas (Christina), daughter Brianne Rae (Eddie), grandchildren Raegan, Otto and Remington; brother Thomas Eltz and sister Marylin Morrissey. He was predeceased by his parents, Linford and Mary Eltz. A memorial service will be held at Martinez-Morse Funeral Home on Sunday, December 12th from 2PM to 5PM. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to CRHC physicians Dr. Yeddu, Dr. Sethi and Dr. Hulse for their support, compassion and collaborative care.
