James Edwin "Ed" Steenrod

James Edwin "Ed" Steenrod was born on September 21, 1922 to Stephen L and Edith Francisco Steenrod at Cook Falls, New York. He was married to Frances E. Charles on November 15, 1942 at East Branch Methodist Church at East Branch, New York. He was a World War ll Veteran entering the U.S. Army in 1942 and was discharged at the end of the war in Europe in the fall of 1945. He served in the North African and Italian Campaigns. Returning from the service he and Frances took up residence in Middletown, New York. In 1946 he became employed by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company which became a life time career with the grocery chain. He was promoted to several managerial positions over the years to include store manager and supervisor over a group of stores. Upon his retirement from the A & P he took a position as a school bus driver for Mid-City Transport Company. He was very fond of children and he loved the job and became very popular with the children who called him "Mr. S". During the same period he owned and operated Academy Fire Extinguisher Company, Middletown, NY He and Frances are members of St. Paul's Methodist Church. He served as a Sunday School Teacher and then as Superintendent of the Sunday School program for the children; St Paul's sponsored Boy Scout Troop 56 which he served as an assistant Scout Master. He was a volunteer at Horton Memorial Hospital for several years and for a short time at Orange Regional Medical Center when it opened. He was a member of the VFW and served as Commander of a local Post and as County Commander. He enjoyed being involved with Veteran Affairs and the men he served with and worked with on veteran matters. Family was the main focus of his life. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family will sorely miss his love and devotion to them in the coming years. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Frances at home, his son Edwin and his wife Kathleen of Middletown, his daughter Sandra and her husband Dennis Gitlin of Miami Florida, and granddaughter Sarah Katherine Steenrod of Middletown, a brother in law Donald Charles and his wife Mary of East Branch New York and a great number of nephews and nieces. The family would like to thank two of nieces; Audrey Pastor and Joan Stiller of Middletown for their love and devotion to their uncle Edwin over the last several years. They were always there to help us with each medical crises of which there were many. The family would also like to thank the neighbors of Jay St. and Commonwealth Ave for all their kindness over the years. One neighbor in particular, Taco Nascimento, became a close friend of both Ed and Frances and has been a great friend and help to both of them. Friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, October 23rd from 2 to 4PM and 7 to 9Pm Morse Funeral Home Inc., 33 Railroad Ave, Middletown NY. A funeral service will take place at 10AM at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 58 W. Main St Middletown NY. Internment will follow at Wallkill Cemetery, Midway Rd Middletown NY with Military Honors.
