Joyce Beverly Johnson

Our beloved mother and grandmother Joyce Beverly Johnson passed away at the age of 93 on September 6, 2025, at Kaplan Hospice located in Newburgh, NY. Joyce was married to Philip Edward Johnson Jr., and they shared 28 years of marriage together until Philip passed away on December 6, 1986. Joyce was born on August 30th ,1932 in Harlem, NY. Joyce and her family lived on 116th Street for many years. She was the daughter of Clifford and Beatrice Scurdy. She also had two siblings Elida & Gregory. Joyce went to Seward Park High school, where she graduated in 1950. She went on to work in a nursing home where she was employed as a nursing aid. Shortly after Joyce and Philip migrated to Hollis Queens, NY, where they bought their first house. They became pillars in this community and raised their family there for many years. Joyce and her family were members of Saint Luke Episcopal Church. She enjoyed many activities such as reading books, watching game shows, all sports, music, vacationing and going out with friends. Most of all she enjoyed being around family and taking care of her loved ones. Joyce will be remembered for her kind heart, beautiful smile and loving spirit, but let's not forget she was a no-nonsense type of lady, who fought for what she believed in until the day she left this Earth. Joyce is survived by her four children named Lana, Glenda, Darlene and Yusuf. She is also survived by one son in law Erol Garvey as well as a sister-in-law Debra. She also has twenty-three grandkids, Dione and Yashika, Dana, Danielle, Aaron & Jasmin, Glenn, Robert, Rasheen and Ishador, Ikeeda and Eddie, Darlicia, Clifford, Alli, Yusuf, Dirul, Aneesha, Yolanda, Shallah G, Shallah S, Laila, and Lailonie. Joyce also has Forty-four great-grandkids, Nyasia, Danaija, Shafiq, Termira, Terron Jr, Terkara, Shakim, Dawon, Aaron, Leyla, Shania, Monique, Glenn Jr, Tayah, Robert Jr, Lily, Chelsea, Chaney, Errol Jr, Shaquette, Orlando, Skyair, David, Sheyanne, Jamiyah, Eric,Blandon, Aziza, Mariah, Jada, Dirul Jr, Jasiah, Alicia, Aliyah, Ryan, Alexis, Tyrell, Tykee, Tyler ,Taylor, Adontae, Ajada, Kayla and Erin. Joyce also has many great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that she loved. Joyce was predeceased by her children Dwayne, Dorian and Darcell. Joyce was the matriarch of this family and will be missed dearly.
