Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Krieger

Elizabeth (“Betsy”) Ann Krieger March 14, 1919- Dec. 14, 2015 Betsy Krieger, age 96, passed peacefully away in her sleep on Monday, December 14th, 2015 in Rock Hill, New York with her daughter by her side. Betsy was born on March 14th, 1919 in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx, NY to the late Herbert and Mary (Lally) Ross. Betsy was the third of six children. She is survived by her younger brother, John Ross of Colorado Springs, Co.; her three children Robert Cashman and his wife Gail of Rockville, Md., Richard Krieger and his partner Tom Piernik of North Hills, CA., and Joan Krieger Rohan and her husband Dick of Rock Hill, NY; four grandchildren, Erin Cashman Mullin (Paul) of Poolesville, Md, Kirsten Patient (Jonathan) of Surrey, UK, Kevin Cashman (Lacey) of Jamesville, NY and Mackenzie Cashman of Gaithersburg, Md; five great grandchildren, Calley, Braedon and Skylar Mullin and Eliot and Adelaide Patient; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her husband Adolph Krieger, her youngest son Kevin Krieger, her older sister Regina Cashman, her older brother Herbert Ross, and her beloved younger sisters Margaret and Theresa Ross. Betsy graduated from Saint Barnabas High School in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx in 1936, and from the Grace Institute Secretarial School (NY, NY) in 1938. After graduation she accepted a position as a secretary at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. During World War II she worked as a secretary for the Inter Chemical Corporation in New York, one of a number of companies who were actively involved in the Manhattan Project. After the war, she married Adolph Krieger, Jr. of Middletown, NY on Sept 29, 1946. Soon thereafter they were one of thousands of veteran couples who bought a house in Levittown, L.I. under the GI Bill. In 1952 they moved to Eastchester, N.Y. Over the next 5 years their family grew with the addition of 4 children leading them to move to a larger house in Chappaqua, NY in 1958. They spent many wonderful summers at their home on Wanaksink Lake and travelled throughout the world first during Adie’s many years with Pepsi Cola and then after he retired. They were long term members of the Sleepy Hollow Country Club where a wonderful celebration in honor of Betsy’s 90th Birthday was held. Betsy was also an active volunteer for the Twigs of Northern Westchester Hospital, a former member of the STS. John & Mary Women’s Axillary, and former Treasurer of the Wanaksink Lake Women’s Club. She spent the last 8 years of her life living with her daughter Joan and her husband Dick Rohan, at their home on Wanaksink Lake in Rock Hill . Throughout her life Betsy was known as a loving wife and mother and along with her husband Adie, wonderful hosts to numerous gatherings with family and friends at their houses in Chappaqua and Wanaksink Lake. Blessed with an Irish “gift of the gab”, Betsy had a knack for engaging anyone she met in friendly conversation that frequently lasted an hour or more and inevitably left you feeling a special connection to her. Betsy was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated January 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at The Church of St. Joseph in Wurtsboro, NY followed by burial in the family plot at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Thornwood, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Betsy Krieger to the Church of St. Joseph, Post Office Box 277, Wurtsboro, N Y, 12790 or to the ASPCA.
